As part of its expanded outreach efforts, the FHJC participated in four separate Pride events during Pride Month 2023. FHJC staff distributed literature and engaged in discussions about fair housing at Pride festivals in Brooklyn, Long Island, Harlem, and at PrideFest NYC.
As we wrap up Pride Month 2023, we want to thank all the organizers and volunteers who made these events possible, enabling us to connect with thousands of New Yorkers and Long Islanders, raising awareness of fair housing rights and the work of the FHJC.
Along with the joy and celebration, it’s important to remember that anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination is very real. Although sexual orientation and gender identity have been protected characteristics for years in New York State and NYC, and are now federally protected, many New York LGBTQ+ families still face discrimination in the housing market, just for being who they are. For Black trans women, the struggle is especially hard.
In the face of increasingly hostile anti-LGBTQ+ legislation being passed in cities and states across the country, the FHJC will continue the fight to eliminate housing discrimination, during Pride month and year-round. Because we ALL have the right to live in open, accessible, inclusive communities.
