On Wednesday March 20, the Fair Housing Justice Center (FHJC) will present Know Your Fair Housing Responsibilities, a fair housing webinar aimed at housing providers in the New York metro area.

Since its founding, the FHJC has brought over 155 successful lawsuits and complaints against a wide array of individuals and companies for violating fair housing laws. While most defendants in those cases have been required to undergo fair housing training, the goal of this workshop is to inform people of their responsibilities under local, state, and federal laws preemptively, and to prevent them from committing violations in the first place.

Landlords, apartment managers, facility operators, and co-op boards are encouraged to attend. Others in the real estate industry such as agents and brokers, lenders, and appraisers are likewise urged to participate.

Topics will include all prohibited conduct and protected characteristics, including race, sex, source of income (vouchers), and disability, along with requests for reasonable accommodations and reasonable modifications. We’ll also take a detailed look at protections against criminal legal system interaction discrimination.

(Note: a training specifically on accessibility requirements in design and construction will be offered at a later date.)

The webinar will take place Wednesday March 20 at 12:00 PM. There is no fee to attend, but registration is required for participants to receive their unique login link. Attendance is anonymous. Only the FHJC as host will have access to participant names. Click HERE or visit bit.ly/ProvidersWebinar to register.

Disclaimer: While this training will discuss fair housing laws, it should not be construed as legal advice. For legal advice pertaining to a specific situation, please consult a housing attorney.

This webinar is being made possible with support from New York Homes and Community Renewal.

The mission of the FHJC, a nonprofit civil rights organization, is to eliminate housing discrimination; promote policies and programs that foster open, accessible, and inclusive communities; and strengthen enforcement of fair housing laws in the New York City region.
